In the afternoon of 15th December, Associate Professor Jianxiong MA of the Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was invited to give a wonderful talk with the theme of "Humanities and Social Sciences” to the teachers and students.
With the title of "The Importance of Humanities and Social Sciences: How do we understand the future and value of Liberal Arts", Professor Ma pointed out that the purpose of studying different disciplines, be it science, engineering or liberal arts, is to lead a happier life, to solve social and life problems, and to allocate and utilise resources in a more rational and efficient manner.
Professor Ma then introduced to the students the major careers and choices in Humanities and Social Sciences, such as Sociology, History, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Journalism and Communication, Creative Media, etc. He advised students to place their future careers in the context of the needs of social development and encouraged them to find the passion to take up social responsibilities.
After the talk, Professor Ma further exchanged views with the students and teachers on the content of the seminar, and the students expressed that they had benefited a lot from the talk. The seminar has deepened students' understanding of the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines and prepared them for their future professional choices and career planning.
